SheMed eligibility: assessment comes first

A published threshold is a starting point for assessment. It cannot tell you whether a particular medicine is right for you.

At a glance

The useful starting point

Published eligibility criteria are a starting point for assessment, not a promise of a prescription. The clinical team must review medical history, current medicines and circumstances before deciding whether treatment is suitable. See the sources.

Eligibility questions often begin with a number, but a clinical assessment needs more context. Your medical history, current medicines, previous treatment and practical circumstances can all matter. Jinkies can explain published information; the prescribing team makes the individual decision.

SheMed's public “What's included” page describes an adult programme with age and BMI criteria. Because provider rules can change, use the current assessment process to confirm them. Do not treat an editorial page or online calculator as an approval.

Distinguish three different decisions

DecisionWhat it establishes
Medicine authorisationThe uses assessed and authorised by the UK regulator
Provider acceptanceWhether a service can assess and support someone under its own processes
Individual prescribingWhether the treatment is clinically appropriate for that person

The current UK adult weight-management indications for the four options discussed in our comparison guide generally cover an initial BMI of at least 30, or at least 27 with a weight-related condition. Diet and physical activity form part of those indications. The relevant product information contains further details and precautions.

SheMed also discusses ethnicity-related risk in its programme criteria. That should not be read as a blanket statement that ethnicity alone changes every medicine's authorised indication. Ask the clinician how your circumstances are being assessed rather than trying to translate one webpage into a prescribing rule.

Prepare accurate information

A useful preparation list is straightforward. Gather your current medicines, including supplements and non-prescription products, and note any previous experience with weight-management treatment. If you are transferring care, keep the details of your existing prescription available.

  • Current health conditions and relevant past problems.
  • Medicines, supplements and known allergies.
  • Previous treatment, response and difficulties.
  • Pregnancy plans, breastfeeding or contraception questions where relevant.
  • Any planned procedure involving anaesthesia or sedation.

Answer the assessment honestly, including details you think might complicate the decision. The purpose is to help the clinician identify an appropriate approach, not to produce a particular questionnaire result.

Ask about a decision you do not understand

If the service needs more information, ask what is missing and who should supply it. If treatment is not recommended, ask for an explanation and whether another form of support would be more appropriate. There may be questions to take back to your usual clinician.

Our blood-test guide explains what to confirm about testing. A sample and a result are part of the process; neither replaces the rest of the assessment.

Separate suitability from the contract

Before paying, check what happens if you are found ineligible or treatment cannot proceed. Ask which charges could be retained, what exclusions apply and how a refund would be handled. A broad reassurance on a marketing page is less useful than an answer tied to your exact order.

Jinkies is an independent affiliate guide and cannot overturn a prescribing decision, verify your eligibility or assess personal health information. Use our plan-terms page for questions about commitment, and contact the provider directly about your assessment.

The useful questions

Questions, answered.

Does meeting a BMI threshold guarantee treatment?
No. A clinician must assess suitability, including medical history, other medicines and relevant precautions. Provider acceptance and a prescription are separate decisions.
Can Jinkies check whether I qualify?
No. We explain public information and questions to prepare. Personal eligibility must be assessed by the provider's clinical team.
