Understanding the four medicine options

Daily tablets and weekly injections have different routines. A useful comparison begins with those differences and your clinical assessment.

At a glance

The useful starting point

Mounjaro is a weekly tirzepatide injection; Wegovy has separate semaglutide injection and tablet formulations; Foundayo is an orforglipron tablet. Routines, instructions and prices differ, and doses are not interchangeable between products. See the sources.

SheMed's treatment page currently names four prescription options: Mounjaro injection, Wegovy injection, Wegovy tablets and Foundayo tablets. This guide explains their basic distinctions as checked on 26 October 2026. It does not rank them or recommend one for an individual.

The basic differences

How the four medicine formulations differ
MedicineIngredientUsual formatPractical distinction
MounjaroTirzepatideWeekly injectionActs at GIP and GLP-1 receptors
Wegovy injectionSemaglutideWeekly injectionInjection routine without fasting
Wegovy tabletsSemaglutideDaily tabletSpecific fasting and timing instructions
FoundayoOrforglipronDaily tabletNo food or water restrictions for administration

The MHRA approved Wegovy tablets in June 2026 and Foundayo in August 2026. Older articles describing these tablets as awaiting UK approval are therefore out of date. Authorisation does not establish NHS funding, current stock or your personal suitability.

Consider the routine you would need to follow

The Wegovy tablet label specifies at least eight hours of fasting before taking it, with a small amount of water, followed by at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other oral medicines. Discuss how that fits with your other prescriptions and day-to-day schedule.

A weekly injection involves a different set of practical questions: using the device correctly, following storage instructions and arranging supplies. Ask for a demonstration or explanation if anything is unfamiliar. Tablet and injection doses cannot simply be compared by the number of milligrams on the pack.

Bring preferences to a clinical conversation

Preferences matter, but they sit alongside health history and medicine-specific precautions. Write down what you find difficult about your existing routine and what you would need explained before trying a different one.

  • Would a daily or weekly routine be easier to remember?
  • Do other medicines create timing questions?
  • Do storage, travel or device use need planning?
  • What monitoring and follow-up would be available?
  • How would persistent side effects be reviewed?

Contraception advice also differs. Foundayo and Mounjaro have specific precautions for oral hormonal contraception. Ask your prescriber to explain the current instructions for your medicine, particularly when starting or changing treatment. Do not assume advice for one product applies unchanged to another.

Read evidence beyond the headline percentage

A comparison of results from separate trials is not automatically a direct comparison between medicines. Ask which dose, population, treatment duration and analysis sit behind a quoted figure. An average is not a personal prediction, and a testimonial cannot tell you what will happen in your circumstances.

Switching treatment also needs a prescribing decision. Do not combine medicines, transfer a schedule from an online chart or make a dose change because another format appears more convenient.

Compare the surrounding service as well

Clinical contact, testing and contract terms are part of the decision about a provider. Our support guide, testing guide and plan-terms checklist cover those questions. The useful questions

Questions, answered.

Are the two tablets authorised in the UK?
Yes. MHRA authorised Wegovy tablets on 11 June 2026 and Foundayo on 10 August 2026. Individual prescribing and NHS access are separate matters.
Can I swap between a tablet and an injection myself?
No. The medicines, formulations and schedules differ. A prescriber needs to assess the change and provide the appropriate instructions.
